The first module of TFP’s comprehensive Formats A-Z course recently concluded in Seoul, under the title Global TV Format Development Workshop 2015.  

For the second year running, KOCCA – the Korean Creative Content Agency – brought together 35 Korean broadcasters and producers for 4 days of lectures, workshops and exercises with 5 of TFP’s consultant trainers, based the the Content Korea Lab on the prestigious Hongik University Campus.  Our thanks to Song Sung-gak, President & CEO of KOCCA, and Michael Song and Heeyeon Yoon of organisers YSK Media.

kim il jeongProfessor Dr. Kim Myung JoongThe module was moderated by TFP CEO Michel Rodrigue, and focused on Creative Development. We began with an excellent analysis of the Korean media landscape from Kim Il Joeng and Professor Dr. Kim Myung Joong. A key theme was the need to extend the Korean TV export market beyond neighbouring China.

The first day was given over to a masterclass from TFP consultant and ideation guru Stéfanie Gélinas on her sought-after development process system – the” Creative Wave”.

 Stefanie explored Inspiration, Ideation and Implementation.  She shared 8 unique sources for ideation and an extraordinary set of questions to challenge your ideas. In the afternoon she took the participants through the next spaces and opportunities or ‘buckets’, before getting everyone involved with a Trends exercise that produced remarkable results in the room.

Over the following days, multi-camera director Tony Gregory talked about how to ideate television formats from images; how to build a show around a physical place, visual ‘centrepiece, and action-inducing situation. TFP CCO & Partner Justin Scroggie explored alternative methods of ideation, and his unique ‘grid’ system for turning good ideas into great narrative formats.  A big theme over the first 2 days was – break the rules!  Tony Gregory returned to explore the value of including directors in the development process, to bring visual focus, 3-dimensional staging, and practical solutions to the table. 

michel speaking 2Michel Rodrigue gave a unique insight from the markets into what broadcasters are looking for worldwide.

He examined the latest trends in formatting, as witnessed by which countries are the hottest buyers, what networks are buying in 2015, which shows are sweeping the international format awards, and what all this can teach us about creating the next crop of new TV ideas.

Justin Scroggie shared his secrets of writing a compelling TV treatment – the written version of your format used to pitch to broadcasters and explain it to your production team.

Justin then gave a personal case history of TFP’s newest format “Chef in Your Ear”, extracting 20 key lessons a format developer can learn from its long journey from devising in 2009 to airing on two territories in fall 2015.

Cross Media consultant and strategist Daniel Ravner, CEO of Practical Innovation,  moved the workshop on to the digital realm, with digital basics TV format people need to know. He examined ways and value of taking your TV show into social media, apps etc., not only to maximise your content but also your revenue as TV revenues continue to fall.

MR w Running Man producerMichel Rodrigue gathered Korean producers to look at lessons learnt over the workshop and how they apply to the Korean content market.  CJ E&M Head of Formats Hwang Jin Woo introduced formats including “I Can See Your Voice”, and explained in discussion how his team applied lessons from TFP/KOCCA workshops.  Danny Park from Mountain TV, producers of travel programming including “extreme mountain-based adventure “Strangers in the Wild”, (Korea/Spain co-pro), talked about the challenges of turning this documentary into an international format, and lessons learnt from this week’s module.  Finally the producer of “Running Man” gave a fascinating insight into the origins and production secrets of this hit Korean format and export, now on its 250th episode!

daniel mcu bestDaniel Ravner returned to the podium to share the challenges and benefits of adding digital extensions to TV programming that are innovative, achievable, complementary, economical – and ideally make money!

Continuing the forward-looking day of workshops, Daniel gave a fascinating and practical guide to creating and ‘telling stories’ in new media, and how this differs from conventional media.
